Column graphs are similar to bar graphs and line graphs. All three have grid lines going horizontally and vertically. The column graph is more similar to the bar graph in that it is used more for one time or single events rather than continuous events.
In the column graph the data is literally presented in columns. The category names can be on the graph or underneath the column. It is not necessary to assign different colors to the columns although one could do so and then attach a legend that would explain the different colors and which category they stood for.
