Working
together, your group will produce a real estate development project using
Legos as your primary building materials. This could be a rural farm community,
a small community of houses, or a commercial district of a city or town. It
could also be a castle, estate, or town in history or a community of the future.
This project will include the following:
1. A folder of notes,
lists, sketches, pictures, graphs, dimensions, etc. from your planning stage
Before you get started, you will need to discuss what kind of real estate you are going to create, what buildings/structures will be included, initial measurements of the buildings, and ideas for landscaping, decorations, and accessories. Make a list of ideas for each. Draw sketches for each other to share your ideas. Write out some possible dimensions. Save all of your work in your folder.
2. A Lego complex which includes at least four buildings, landscaping, decorations, and accessories
The buildings should be complicated structures with lots of angles, dimensions, extensions, etc. Your landscaping, decorations and accessories should create an interesting environment/context for your complex. Do n't limit yourself to accessories in the Lego set. Be creative about your use of materials. Create an aesthetically pleasing project.
3. A display of the
volumes of your buildings
Use pictures, charts, graphs, or spreadsheets to display the information in a way that shows more than just the total volume of each building. For example, you may want to show the number of Lego units you used of each color. Use your analytical thinking to come up with other ways to categorize the materials used.
4. A booklet which advertises your project
As the architects, you need to convince people to put money into this project. You are extremely proud of your work and want to show others what you have created.
5. A presentation of
your project to the class
Try to think of some unusual way of presenting your project. How about a video, a skit, a commercial, or a panel presentation? Your information should be well organized and clearly presented, but use your imagination, as well, to create an interesting presentation format.
6. An evaluation of
your project and how your group worked together
Each of you will submit an individual evaluation of your group's project. You will use the rubric to rate each aspect of the project. In addition, you will write out comments concerning how your group worked together and the part you played in the process.
7. Challenge A bill for the cost of the basic Lego building materials
Assign a different dollar amount to each Lego color. For example, red could be worth $3.00 a Lego unit. Write out a itemized bill for the cost of the basic building materials for your Lego complex.
A rubric spells out the
expectations for a student's work on a particular assignment. This rubric
will help guide you as to your teachers' expectations for the LEGO VOLUME
DEVELOPMENT UNIT. By using the rubric to guide your work, you should be able
to produce a work of highest quality.
