The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

About UN image

After the terrible losses both of lives and freedoms in various countries of the world during World War II, leaders including President Franklin Roosevelt became very interested in preventing future wars, particularly ones of the magnitude of World War II. In 1945 fifty nations met in San Francisco to form the United Nations. One basic purpose of the United Nations besides preventing world wars is to support basic human rights throughout the world. On November 10, 1948 the United Nations voted to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document spells out the basic rights that all human beings should have in our world, regardless of race, religion, gender, etc.. The committee that drew up this document was headed by Franklin Roosevelt's widow, Eleanor Roosevelt.

This document has served as a model for many countries who have tried to have democratic principles as part of their constitutions.
