
The Supreme Court is the top or highest court in our land. It is made up of nine justices. Their jobs are to decide if a law is constitutional. That means that the law follows the Constitution. If the law is unconstitutional, meaning that it does not follow the Constitution, it cannot be a law. The Supreme Court also hears cases that deal with federal laws or matters and write opinions on these cases. The ruling in the case depends on which side most of the judges think is correct.
Supreme Court justices are chosen by the president. Their names and job resumes are sent to the Congress who decide whether they should be appointed. They can serve for life, unless Congress decides that they should no longer serve on the Supreme Court.
