The legislative branch of government makes the laws. At the national level, the Congress is the legislative body in charge of making the laws for our land. Congress is made up of two parts - the Senate and the House of Representatives. These lawmakers are elected.
At the state level, there are two parts to the legislature - the state assembly and the state senate.
At the county level, there is the county legislature with legislators elected from different areas of the county.
