Thousandths, as the word implies, is the place value that represents one thousandth of a whole. It is also one tenth of a hundredth and one hundredth of a tenth.
The thousandths place is commonly encountered in science, in the metric system of measure. Below is a chart that shows the relationship between tenths, hundredths and thousandths. In a sense, each tenth and hundredth can be expressed as a thousandth.
| .1 | One tenth | .10 | Ten hundredths | .100 | One hundred thousandths |
| .01 | One hundredth | .010 | Ten thousandths | ||
| .001 | One thousandth |
Again, when comparing tenths, hundredths and thousandths, it is helpful to insert zeros after the tenths and hundredths so that the comparisons are more obvious.
The rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals are the same for thousandths as tenths and hundredths.
