Tenths or numbers in the tenths place are exactly as their name implies - they are tenths of one whole. Ten tenths would be equal to one whole, as illustrated below.


Tenths are written as a decimal point. As with all decimals, tenths can be written as fractions with a denominator of 10.

Any number can also be written as a decimal number with tenths in it. For example the number 7 can also be written as 7.0 which is the whole number seven and zero tenths.
One of the most common representations of tenths in our everyday life is the dime. A dime is literally one tenth of a dollar and ten dimes or ten tenths equal a dollar.. The dollar is usually regarded as "one whole" in our money or monetary system.
