Adding Hundreths

Adding hundredths is very similar to adding whole numbers and adding tenths. One must be very careful to line up the numbers to be added so that the parts of the numbers with the same place value are in a column.

Here is a very simple example of adding hundredths.

twenty hundredths animation

.20

Twenty Hundredths +

Thirty hundredths animation.

.30

Thirty Hundredths =

Fifty hundredths animation

.50

Fifty Hundredths

0.34

Thirty-four hundredths +

0.09

Nine hundredths +

3.33

Three and thirty-three hundredths =

3.76

Three and seventy-six hundredths

Notice how the numbers are lined up in columns and that there is a zero in the tenths place in the number .09. This is necessary and the proper way to write the number. The zeroes before the decimal points in the numbers 0.34 and the zero before the decimal in 0.09 is not necessary, but is convenient to help line the numbers up correctly by place value.
